Banished was featured in ITVS’s landmark Community Cinema program, producing community engagement screenings in 40 markets during January 2008. All screenings were conducted between 10 and 60 days prior to the film’s scheduled national broadcast on Independent Lens and focused on racism, violence, reparations, and the impact of urban development on communities of color. Banished screenings welcomed 5,400 community members to these events, which included special guest speakers and panel discussions with civil rights leaders, historians, legal experts and journalists. ITVS produced companion discussion guides to support the screenings and for use by viewers at home. More than 200 community-based and national organizations partnered with ITVS to engage audiences around this timely film that exposed the hidden history of racial cleansing in America.
