ITVS awarded 13 NEW AMERICANS Community Engagement grants to public television stations and their community partners.
Nebraska ETV Network (NETV)
NETV and Southeast Community College targeted the college audience on three campuses and the television audience of the entire state. SCC presented an intensive workshop for their ESL instructors; utilized ITVS resources in their ongoing faculty/staff diversity training; and organized campus events for students, faculty and staff. NETV presented a statewide public television outreach call-in special on April 7, featuring experts from key agencies.
WEDU - Tampa, FL
WEDU, in partnership with the Florida Center for Survivors of Torture, Strength-Based Supportive Solutions and local educational and employment institutions, provided training to business and organizations that provide support, services, education, training and jobs to refugees. The goals of the training were to sensitize these businesses and organizations to the diverse issues, needs and cultures
WHYY - Philadelphia, PA
This collaborative effort of Nationalities Service Center, the Community College of Philadelphia and WHYY, consisted of three forums designed to deepen understanding and raise awareness of issues facing immigrant communities. These forums provided networking opportunities and resource development for a diverse field of participants.
Iowa Public Television (IPTV)
IPTV partnered with the University of Northern Iowa's New Iowans Program to complement the series with community forums promoting respect for and accommodation of immigrants and refugees. They also disseminated the series along with The New Iowans handbook to Iowa classrooms and hosted videoconferencing events.
WHTJ - Charlottesville, VA
In partnership with the Charlottesville City Schools Adult English as a Second Language program, WHTJ created a workshop that increased cultural awareness and the cross-cultural communication competency of professionals working with immigrants and refugees. WHTJ will also produce a wrap-around program that explored the challenges facing local immigrants, refugees and the community, possible solutions and the advantages of working together.
KLRU - Austin, TX
KLRU, the Austin Police Department and the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library co-hosted a town hall meeting to develop and strengthen coalitions, resources and activities focused on immigration.
KUED - Salt Lake City, UT
KUED's outreach included community workshops, a local call-in special, on-air spots and community events. Workshops aimed at fostering understanding and dialogue included mapping exercises, film clips, interviews with refugees/immigrants, resource materials, cultural performances and ethnic food.
UNC-TV - Research Triangle Park, NC
UNC-TV's Adult Education pilot program, "The Spanish Community Literacy Project" and the "Bridges to Diversity" outreach campaign collaborated to conduct community educational awareness workshops and diversity training.
KEET - Eureka, CA
KEET's outreach initiative included collaboration with students and staff at the Eureka Adult School. Outreach activities included: the sponsorship of THE NEW AMERICANS Resource Fair, which encouraged community building and provided information on resources available to immigrants and refugees in Humboldt County; a Ready To Learn workshop booth at the fair; and the inclusion of video modules, discussions and other outreach materials in ESL curriculum.
WXEL - Boynton Beach, FL
Through its strong partnership with the Palm Beach County School District Dept. of Adult Education, Instructional Television, Family Literacy, and ESOL, WXEL reached out to educators, adult ESOL students, immigrant children and families and key professionals from immigrant organizations. Targeted populations were invited to a screening and discussion where community resource booths were showcased.
South Dakota Public Broadcasting (SDPB)
SDPB partnered with Lutheran Social Services Refugee and Immigration Department in Sioux Falls, SD; University of South Dakota Business professors in Vermillion, SD; and civic groups such as Rotary and Jaycees. SDPB and partners worked together to give presentations to educate employers and business students about issues facing immigrant workers, providing companion materials and Web resources.
KNME - Albuquerque, NM
KNME created a learning community with New Mexico Coalition of Literacy, Catholic Charities Refugee Resettlement Program and UNM College Enrichment program. THE NEW AMERICANS of New Mexico Learning Community organized through workshops, trainings and a statewide conference utilizing outreach materials from the series.
WSKG - Binghampton, NY
WSKG worked with community partners to create a follow-up program promoting awareness and understanding and addressing local issues and resources for our immigrant and refugee population. The program was included in education/training for community colleges, schools, ESL programs, police, health workers and human resource workers.
