THE FIGHT IN THE FIELDS: Cesar Chavez and the Farmworkers' Struggle

This is the story of the first successful union for farmworkers and its charismatic leader Cesar Chavez. Chavez and the United Farmworkers Union (UFW) inspired Chicano activism of the ‘60s and ‘70s, and in the process involved millions of Americans in a non-violent struggle for social justice. Befriended by Robert Kennedy and attacked by the Teamsters, Chavez was the most important Latino leader in this U.S. history. The movement he led changed American politics forever.
Premiere: PBS, April 16, 1997 at 9 PM
