STILL LIFE WITH ANIMATED DOGS traces the filmmaker's tumultuous life from Stalinist Czechoslovakia to the United States as seen through his relationships with his dogs. It is Fierlinger's loyalty and caring for his dog that sustains him even in an atmosphere of oppression and suspicion. Each dog serves as a marker of its master's personal growth from a misanthrope to an artist who appreciates the divine powers of nature. 2001 PEABODY AWARD winner. An INDEPENDENT LENS acquisition.

Produced for ITVS

Premiere: Independent Lens, October 24, 2006 at 10:30 PM (encore presentation)

"Kind in nature, but tempered by Fierlinger's sardonic Eastern European humor, STILL LIFE WITH ANIMATED DOGS is a marvelous work that offers more emotion, poetry and reflective wisdom than the vast majority of feature-length, live-action films."
- BARK Magazine
"You don’t have to be a canine lover to find the cartoon “documentary” both whimsical and profound."
- Chattanooga Times Free Press
"Fierlinger puzzles over man’s relationship to dog, nature and the world in this provocative essay in words and pictures."
- The Chicago Tribune
"…. a visually delightful animated documentary…"
