TEST OF COURAGE: The Making of a Firefighter is an intimate portrait of young men and women from ethnically and economically diverse backgrounds who must compete to become firefighters in Oakland, California. As they meet the intense daily pressures of saving lives, these young heroes not only test their courage, they are challenged to navigate cultural divides and to trust one another.

Premiere: PBS, September 3, 2000 at 10 PM

"Its depiction of the humanity under the helmet makes TEST OF COURAGE required viewing for everyone....It does an excellent job of showing the balancing act OFSA is forced to perform to encourage diversity in the department. "
