Associate Manager of Distribution

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA -- Help manage the workflow from filmmaker submissions to multiple distribution platforms, while maintaining strong relationships with major public media partners, filmmakers, and colleagues.


The Associate Manager, Broadcast & Digital Distribution plays a key role in supporting ITVS’s overall distribution and partner relations strategy, with a focus on the public media system while collaborating with Director on non-public media integrations and innovations. The Associate Manager’s  main responsibilities include: 1) project managing submission, distribution, and rights tracking of ITVS-funded films across signature public television series and distributors including, Independent Lens, POV, PBS, World Channel and more 2) maximize distribution of ITVS’s new release, catalog, and digital-native content across digital platforms 3) maintain strong relationships with major public media partners, filmmakers, and internal ITVS cross-teams, as well as non-public media platforms and partners.

The Associate Manager is an innovative thinker whose creativity is as sharp as their attention to detail.  This key role will surface opportunities that evolve strategies that drive productions into submission, through negotiations, and ultimately to its distribution premiere and catalog resurfacing across multiple platforms.

As a strong interpersonal communicator, strategic listener, and nimble thinker, the Associate Manager will liaise closely with Production, Programming, Business Affairs, and Audience Development teams to ensure a high standard of efficient and accurate management of ITVS pipeline titles and their distribution rights.



  • Manage submission workflows and work closely with various functional groups (eg, Business Affairs, Programming, Production) to fulfil coproduction distributions across public media
  • Track distribution across platforms and series including but not limited to, Independent Lens, POV, PBS, World Channel, NETA, APT
  • Review and assess long-form films as they enter ITVS pipeline and track production to submission progress
  • In partnership with Director, develop clear and actionable strategy for emerging types of content licenses, and deliver internal presentations around key strategic initiatives
  • Manage pristine accuracy and ownership of institution-wide and unit-specific tracking databases, which include partner metrics, release dates, rights windows, and more
  • Manage re-windowing of Independent Lens titles in partnership with Audience Development; assists Director with contract negotiations and contracts with Business Affairs
  • Collaborate with Business Affairs to accurately program, manage, and deliver avails reports and seasonal Independent Lens rights management trackers
  • Provide regular streaming quarterly and annual reports and analysis on on-going and new broadcast and digital initiatives 
  • Project manage independent releases through NETA and APT, including liaising communications and asset management between partners, producers, internal cross-teams, and hired consultants
  • Work with Director to research potential for customer facing online platforms for ITVS catalog
  • Alongside Director, educate, engage, and lead filmmakers through various cycles of their relationship with ITVS to ensure consistent and positive experience; starting with programming and production team; through to Business Affairs; and regular updates to Audience Development (marketing, communications, station relations, et al)
  • Develop in depth knowledge of ITVS catalog to maximize opportunities with Director
  • Contribute to overall relationship-building strategy with partners
  • Managing the flow of information and tracking 3rd party Distribution partners
  • With Director, tracking, surfacing and discussing changing film and television distribution landscapes, with a specific eye on areas affecting documentary and independent film, including platform, partner, and rights and window usage around SVOD/AVOD/TVOD/MVOD, noteworthy acquisitions and box office reports, and more
  • Working with Director, develop plans for new distribution opportunities and deal renewals across all platforms for program distribution                                                  


  • BA or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of three years’ experience developing and maintaining external relationships
  • Minimum of three years’ experience in communications, publicity, and/or outreach role
  • Experience in film and television distribution--and distribution rights--is a big plus
  • Experience with data tracking, and, ideally, data analysis
  • Demonstrate agility maneuvering within different databases and information tracking systems
  • Experience organizing and implementing new processes and procedures
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple assignments in a fast-paced, high-performing environment
  • Strong initiative with ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Well-developed verbal and written communications skills
  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Proficient in Excel, PowerPoint, FileMaker, MS Word, Keynote with the ability to quickly learn new databases, project management, and graphics applications
  • Experience with project management tools, such as WorkFront or BaseCamp
  • Experience and have an interest in film, documentaries,  and/or television
  • Positive attitude, sense of humor
