Three ITVS programs Win Peabody Awards
The George Foster Peabody Awards, administered by the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, is the oldest, and one of the most prestigious honors in electronic media.
Among this year’s winners are three ITVS programs Reel Injun: On the Trail of the Hollywood Indian, The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers and The Lord Is Not on Trial Here Today. Congratulations to the filmmakers on this incredible achievement! This brings the total of Peabody awards for ITVS films to 19.
Reel Injun: On the Trail of the Hollywood Indian by Neil Diamond, which aired on Independent Lens, is an exciting, insightful and entertaining feature length documentary about the evolution of the image of North American Native people (“The Indians”) in famous Hollywood movies, from the silent era to today.
The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers by Judith Ehrlich and Rick Goldsmith, which aired on P.O.V., is the story of what happens when a former Pentagon insider, armed only with his conscience, steadfast determination, and a file cabinet full of classified documents, decides to challenge an “Imperial” Presidency — answerable to neither Congress, the press, nor the people — in order to help end the Vietnam War.
The Lord Is Not on Trial Here Today by Jay Rosenstein, an ITVS co-production with WILL-TV through our LINCS initiative, is the compelling personal story of the woman responsible for one of the most important and landmark First Amendment cases in U.S. Supreme Court history that set the foundation for the separation of church and state in public schools. The Peabody Awards will be presented May 23 at a luncheon at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City with Larry King as host.
