Quick! Today is the last day to submit your documentary film proposal to the MacArthur Foundation. Lucky New York dwellers: The Independent Filmmaker Project (IFP) is hosting a filmmaker conference Sept. 16-20, including pitch workshops and small group conversations. They called it “The Bullfight of the Century.” You can watch it as an 11-minute free LIFE magazine documentary. Ernest Hemingway’s protégé, the young bullfighter Antonio Ordóñez, inspired Luis Miguel Dominguín to come out of retirement for a one-on-one bullfight in Malaga, Spain. Also courtesy of LIFE magazine comes a series of 1945 photos of the beautiful and versatile actress Ingrid Bergman, star of Casablanca and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Summer is crossfading into fall, and it’s time to get wistful about it. Five directors chose their favorite summer flicks, including everything from Clueless and Y Tu Mamá También, for the New York Times. If you need any pointers on how to do a tasteful reenactment, this slick 7-minute documentary, Always a Fire, offers plenty of lessons. A promising athlete suffers an injury could have decimated his career, but the young man rises at an unprecedented rate of recovery. Start your weekend with a heavy dose of inspiration.
