Before there was StoryCorps, there was Sound Portraits. Check out their comprehensive archive of radio documentaries. (via @CDSduke). Change is afoot. Corey Ford, a former FRONTLINE documentarian, has been named director of the Public Media Accelerator, an incubator funded by the Knight Foundation to drive innovation in journalism. “We know [Socrates] was born in 469 BC and married to a famously shrewish woman called Xanthippe. When asked why he married her, he replied that a horse trainer had to practice on the most spirited of animals.” — Alain de Botton in his new documentary television series, Philosophy: A Guide to Happiness.

Creative Commons, the U.S. Department of Education, and the Open Society Foundations are launching a video competition called “Why Open Education Matters.” The deadline is June 5, 2012. The Los Angeles Times published a video profile of a clockmaker this week. Shot beautifully in digital video, the profile offers an homage to an analog craft.
