Posted on March 4, 2011
On Tuesday, March 8 at 1 PM ET / 10 AM PT, PBS NewsHour will team up with ITVS and Independent Lens to present a panel discussion on violence against women in the Congo and beyond. Set on the 100th anniversary of  International Women’s Day, the online discussion will use news reports and footage from the upcoming Independent Lens documentary Pushing the Elephant to shed light on the effects of war on women and families. Moderated by NewsHour Correspondent Hari Sreenivasan, the online discussion will feature Rose Mapendo, survivor and advocate from the Democratic Republic of Congo whose story is chronicled in Pushing the Elephant. Additional panelists include the film's directors Beth Davenport and Elizabeth Mandel; and Adotei Akwei, managing director of government relations for Amnesty International. Last month, NewsHour and ITVS teamed up to present a discussion on the historic changes in Egypt and both organizations are excited to continue this partnership around the most pressing issues affecting women around the world. The live event will be open to the public and participants are encouraged to log on and ask questions. Honor International Women’s Day by joining the discussion next Tuesday, March 8 at 1PM ET / 10 AM PT
