My Omaha
My Omaha tells the story of filmmaker Nick Beaulieu's personal journey to document the racial justice movement of his hometown and reconcile with his terminally ill father, a supporter of President Trump. Guided by the mentorship of community activist Leo Louis II, Nick navigates family conflict, political and racial discord, and the difficult search for common ground.
In 2016, Nick was fresh out of journalism school and determined to understand how the BLM movement and President Trump's first presidency were affecting his hometown, especially the white suburbs where he grew up and the predominantly Black community of North Omaha—the birthplace of Malcolm X and an emerging hub for community activism. Nick also takes his camera home to explore the tense relationship he has with his father Randy, a conservative Christian who supports President Trump. When Randy is suddenly diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, they commit to a series of conversations in the hopes of finding a place of mutual understanding.
