A full five years before Rosa Parks made her stand on an Alabama bus, gay rights activist Harry Hay was launching America’s first successful gay rights group, the Mattachine Society. Founded by former members of the Communist Party, the group won a landmark entrapment case against the Los Angeles Police Department that changed the face of gay civil rights in America.
