Filmmaker Nick Beaulieu explores his hometown’s racial justice movement while trying to reconnect with his terminally ill, conservative father.
My Omaha begins in 2016 as the emergence of Donald Trump intensifies political and racial divisions across the United States. Seeking to understand the widening divide between the white suburbs where he grew up and the historically Black neighborhoods of North Omaha, Nebraska, filmmaker Nick Beaulieu meets community activist Leo Louis II, an independent organizer at the center of the city’s racial justice movement. Through Leo, Nick is introduced to a side of his hometown he’s never fully seen—a community fighting to protect itself, preserve its history, and survive systems that have long neglected it.
At the same time, Nick begins documenting increasingly fraught conversations with his father, Randy, a conservative Christian and devoted Trump supporter, whose sudden stage-4 cancer diagnosis forces both men to confront the emotional and ideological distance between them before time runs out.
As Omaha is shaken by protests, political unrest, and the aftermath of a polarizing death tied to the movement, Nick finds himself pulled between family conflict, personal reckoning, and the lived realities Leo has long navigated. What begins as an investigation into political division becomes an intimate exploration of race, identity, family, and the search for truth in contemporary America.
